Make an Omnidirectional Wi-Fi Antenna for Internet Access

An Omnidirectional antenna is a wireless antenna that transmits or intercepts radio frequencies (electromagnetic waves) well in all directions on a horizontal plane. Unlike Directional antenna, which exude enhanced performance in a certain specific direction with bias to other directions, omnidirectional antenna do not have this bias. They work in all directions of a two-dimensional geometric plane. This means that little energy is radiated upwards or downwards hence, it reduces losses wastage. They can be either horizontally oriented or vertically oriented.

Omnidirectional antenna are commonly used in radio devices such as cellular phones, FM radios, GPS and wireless computer networks. Because of their unique ability to radiate and intercept signals well in all directions, omnidirectional antenna are preferred to directional antenna. They enable connections that are strong in all directions hence they are the most preferred for networking. A good network will ensure that all devices in the network can receive signals on an equal platform. Connections such as Wifi connections must be able to support connections from many directions. Wifi routers usually have an omnidirectional antenna that enables them to transmit and intercept signals from multiple directions. Additionally, devices such as mobile phones and laptops that are WiFi enabled usually have an in-built omnidirectional antenna.

These devices can be very costly when purchased at the store. However, you do not always have to part with money to have that wireless receptor that you desire. You can make one for yourself if you have the correct material. Here is how you can make one on your own:

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN WIFI ANTENNA

1. You need:

· Can (medium size in diameter),

· Solder paste,

· copper wire (about 2inches thick)

· N-female chassis (to mount connector)

· U.FL to RP-SMA cable,

· Duct tape,

· Tripod stand

· Drill (electric or manual)

· Soldering iron.

2. Here is how:

· Using your drill, punch a small hole through the can; a few centimetres to the base.

· Try fitting the connector through the hole. Widen the hole to ensure that the connector’s diameter can fit in perfectly. The connector should be firm enough not to fall off.

· Firmly set the adaptor.

· With your soldering iron, Solder the copper wire to the connector (the connector should be inside the can).

· Fit in the U.FL to RP-SMA cable into the connector outside the can.

· Connect the pigtail cable to the Wi-Fi device.

· Using the duct tape, base the can on the tripod.

· Tilt the can so that it faces the Wi-Fi adaptor (it should be able to receive the signal strongly).

· You can now enjoy your Wi-Fi antenna.

Note:

· The Wi-Fi connector and adaptor must be compatible, so ensure that they are compatible or your antenna will not work.

· Tilting the can (antenna) may not be necessary it is only done to attain optimal signal strength when you find that the signal is weak.
